A Message to Dental Professionals
By Dr. Heather Robinson
The increasing scope and complexity of procedures performed in the dental operatory, as well as the special needs of an increasingly diverse patient population pose significant challenges for the modern dental practitioner. While many procedures can be performed under local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide sedation, certain complex procedures, procedures performed on patients with special needs, or patients too young to cooperate often require a more controlled and deeper level of anesthesia. In particular, elderly patients, patients with medical co-morbidities, physical disabilities, anxiety, and children may require more sophisticated analgesia and anesthesia. It is within this capacity that Dr. Robinson and her team of dentist anesthesiologists offer their expertise. Until recently, there has been little use of advanced techniques in anesthesia within the specialty of dentistry, largely due to the prohibitive cost of hospital-based anesthesia and the lack of availability of these options in the outpatient setting. The increasing availability of dentist anesthesiologists and advancements in medical technology have made it possible to safely and effectively provide hospital-grade anesthesia to the dental setting.
With our extensive anesthesiology training, Midwest Dental Anesthesia can be an invaluable resource in the dental office. We assist in situations where local anesthesia is insufficient and where moderate, deep, or even general anesthesia may be necessary. Our experience in providing all levels of anesthesia enables colleagues to focus entirely on their dental/surgical procedures. This allows for a safer, more predictable, and comfortable experience for both the patient and the dentist. In addition, we provide all the necessary anesthesia-related equipment and medications to turn your dental office into a state-of-the-art surgical suite.

Keeping Your Patients Safe
Pre-Operation
Safety Starts Before the Operation
We require a patient history and pre-operative evaluation to be provided for each patient. A thorough review of this information is the most important step in preventing an emergency. Prior to the appointment, we will review important medical information with the patient and answer any questions they have regarding the sedation.
During the Operation
Creating a Safe Environment
Hospital-Grade Equipment: We purchase, maintain, and provide our own state-of-the-art, hospital-grade equipment. Providing our own top-tier equipment ensures we know how to properly use the equipment, the equipment is properly maintained, and the drugs are not expired.
Monitoring: During the operation, we utilize state-of-the-art monitors and systems to track patient health. We provide all equipment and supplies to your office. Your anesthesia provider is present throughout the entire procedure.
Safest Methods: We utilize methods that place safety ahead of convenience. When administering general anesthesia, we do not use open airway procedures. Instead, we use a tube that goes in through the nose and protects the airway to ensure your patient breathes freely and without concern of interruption to your dental procedures.
